Level 2 CYPW NVQ – Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce

This qualification is designed to help learners build the knowledge and skills needed when working under supervision with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas working in children’s settings including early years and social care.
It is also a must-have for all those undertaking the Level 2 Children and Young People’s Apprenticeship.

Listed below are all the mandatory units and assessments you will need to complete as part of the qualification. As well as the mandatory units there is a choice of ‘optional units’ which form part of the qualification. Your tutor or assessor will either supply you with copies of your chosen units or direct you to the relevant page on the website so you can download them.
Mandatory Units:
  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Contribute to the support of child and young person development
  • Contribute to children and young people’s health and safety
  • Contribute to the support of positive environments for children and young people
  • Understand partnership working in services for children and young people
Optional Units:
  • Understand child and young person development
  • Understand how to support positive outcomes for children and young people
  • Support children and young people at meal or snack times
  • Contribute to the support of children’s communication, language and literacy
  • Contribute to the support of children’s creative development

  • How to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused, harmed or bullied
  • How to communicate with children and young people.
  • How to contribute to assessments of the development needs of children and young people
  • How to support the development of children and young people
  • How to support children and young people experiencing transitions
  • How to support children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • How to use reflective practice to improve own contribution to child and young person development
This Level 2 qualification provides opportunities for progression to further study of
the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce (England).
It enables credits and learning to be transferred from this qualification to the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce (England) providing a direct progression route.
On completion of this qualification learners can progress to various job roles, dependent on their chosen career pathway. The following list is not exhaustive, but indicative of the opportunities available.

Specific job roles may include:

  •  assistant pre-school workers
  •  assistants in children’s centres
  •  assistants in day nurseries, nursery schools and nursery classes in primary schools.
  •  registered childminders and nannies

General opportunities:

  •  support workers in the above settings
  •  anyone who works with children and young people in the voluntary sector,including volunteers who are not covered by another sector skills body.
